5 Ways to Make a Difference in Elections
There is always a way to make an impact in your community, even if you are under 18 and even if you aren’t eligible to vote.
Youth may not be able to vote in a way that determines who gets elected, but they can still have a big impact!
#1: Help the adults in your life cast an informed vote
Did you know that fewer than 10% of registered Durham voters actually turn up to vote in local elections? Make sure the adults in your life know about the candidates and issues on the ballot and know voting dates and requirements. Read and discuss the KVD Youth Candidate Guide with family & friends.
#3: Use your voice
While you may be too young to vote, you are old enough to care about our community and democracy. Contact one your elected officials and tell them where you stand on issues that are important to you. Advocate for your causes in local media or discuss issues at the dinner table. Attend the KVD Youth Candidate Forum and talk with Durham's future elected officials.
#2: Help get out the vote in Durham
Over 85% of eligible Durham voters are registered to vote, but only between 5- 50% show up on Election Day. Conduct a "Pledge to Vote Drive" in your community, using models from Kids Voting Durham and TeachingTolerance.org have models and tools you can use to conduct your drive. Or, you can volunteer with non-partisan organizations like YouCanVote.org to help them get out the vote.
#4: Throw a different election party
Voting is something to celebrate! Get a multi-age group together to talk about candidates, elections, and voting. Go to the KVD Family Voting Celebration or download a voting party guide from MomsRising.org.
#5: Vote and Volunteer with Kids Voting Durham
Kids Voting Durham wants to know what youth think. We give K-12 students an opportunity to vote on the same candidate and publishes the results in local media and schools. Plus, Kids Voting has youth leadership & service opportunities that let you get more involved in current elections and help other students do the same. KidsVotingDurham.org has updated information about events and opportunities.
